KFJC’s 38th Month of Mayhem packed with more than 40 radio specials

Award-winning, student and volunteer-run Foothill College radio station KFJC 89. 7 FM is launching its 38th annual “Month of Mayhem” on May 2, 2018. This annual KFJC tradition features a month of special music and public affairs programming produced by KFJC volunteers. KFJC’s Mayhem 2018 includes at least 44 specials so far, with more being added through the end of the month.

College radio stations go ‘bonkers’ for Vinylthon

Last week’s #SaveStudentNewsrooms campaign garnered a lot of attention (even from Lyle Lovett), but another awareness campaign was held in late April. One a little more old school. College Radio Day hosted Vinylthon, an event encouraging college radio stations to play vinyl records and drum up new listeners to the old format.

The sale price of Shaw University’s WSHA radio station is revealed in FCC filing

An application filed with the FCC this week revealed the purchase price of Shaw University’s radio station WSHA. Educational Media Foundation, a California-based non-profit organization, will pay $3.5 million for the station’s 88.9 FM frequency, pending FCC approval.

After Hiatus, WJMD Comes Back On-Line for Student and Public Listeners

After a host of technical issues and equipment problems, Kalamazoo’s student radio station WJMD is back on the air. According to co-manager Diana Toj-Ortiz ‘18, at one point there was talk of turning the WJMD recording booth into storage space. But the club has fought hard for their ability to continue recording, and over the summer of 2017, they saw upgrades to both their software and soundboard. The group re-connected to internet radio provider Live365 during the fall, and Toj-Ortiz and co-manager Kaspar Hudak ‘19 began to train students to use the equipment during Winter Quarter.

During 50 years on the air at 89.1-FM, WONC radio at Naperville’s North Central College has given hundreds of students the chance to hone their skills, adjust to significant changes in technology and play music.

At The Chronicle, we know we are not the only student resource that deserves wider recognition of what we can provide to incoming Columbia students. The English and Creative Writing Department’s literary magazine Hair Trigger as well as the college radio station WCRX are interdisciplinary projects that have been pushed to the sidelines of what the college decides to celebrate and highlight.
