Weekly Showcase: The College at Brockport

Our Weekly Showcase station this week is Brockport Television and Production broadcasting from The College at Brockport: State University of New York. The station started in 1999 with just one show called “Watch This Show”.  Since then, they have grown into a production facility that provides students the opportunity to actively engaged in regular television productions.

One of their regular programs is the Brockport News Network, which covers all the latest news on campus.

They also provide an impressive weekly weather forecast on their Facebook page, which you can watch here – Weather 3/6 to 3/11

Another one of their regular programs is the Eagle’s Nest, which covers all the sports action at Brockport.

They also cover various events such as the Harry Potter Flash Mob that took place on their campus last Spring.

Weekly Showcase: DePaul University

Our Weekly Showcase station this week is Radio DePaul broadcasting from DePaul University in Chicago! This award-winning student run station plays a wide variety of music from pop, dubstep, indie, retro, and much more; as well as talk, news, and sports shows.

Radio DePaul has had some great national exposure this year when iHeartRadio chose them as one of the first 14 college stations to be added to their services.  They are also one of the top 10 stations up for the mtvU College Radio Woodie award!

Included on their website is a great video explaining who they are and what it is like at their station!

Weekly Showcase: Ohio University

This week we are showcasing ACRN (All Campus Radio Network) broadcasting from Ohio University! Founded in 1971, the all student-run station has a long and rich history. Since 1999 the station has been a 24/7 webcasting power house playing a “college rock” format but also including speciality shows ranging from hip-hop, metal, punk and classic rock.

The station uses their website and social media in creative ways to interact with their audience. They offer four different blogs from their staff talking about the latest music news and they have a Tumblr page that features photos from recent shows.

They also produce videos to highlight local bands and recent guests!

Article: “The Case for College Radio”

Olivia Yankey from wrote an article asking “When was the last time you listened to your campus radio station?” and stating that “College students are a part of the age group that’s abandoned radio faster than anyone else in the U.S. With iPods, music-enabled smart phones and websites like Pandora and 8tracks, it isn’t hard to see why radio listenership of all types has been on the decline.” It also discusses what some stations are doing to get fellow students interested in their station. Weekly Showcase: Oregon State University

Our weekly showcase station this week is KBVR-TV from Oregon State University. KBVR-TV is a student-run television station that provides student-generated content to their school. They have a variety of different studio shows that are produced regularly such as Beaver News, Beaver Sports Show (a finalist in the 2011 CBI Best Sportscast category), Bombshell Music News, Locals Live (a finalist in the 2011 CBI Best General Entertainment Program), and many others!

“Beaver Sports Show” is a weekly show that highlights all the latests sports at OSU. Check out their latest episode:

“Beaver News” is a nightly newscast produced by the students of KBVR.

And “Locals Live” is a live music performance show that showcases local and regional bands.

Weekly Showcase: Bowling Green State University

 Our weekly showcase station this week is WFAL Falcon Radio at Bowling Green State University. Founded over 40 years ago in a student’s dorm room, it was originally the campus AM station known as 1610 AM-WFAL. Now known as Falcon Radio, WFAL broadcasts on the web and local radio airwaves. 

The station offers a wide variety of music genres, news, sports, and talk shows. One of their popular talk shows is TransTalk, which is a weekly radio show about transgender issues. You can listen to their stream live every day on their website

College Radio at Coastal Carolina University

UConn Student TV Apologizes for Skit

UCTV, University of Connecticut’s student-run and student-funded television station, has been a hot topic in the last few weeks after a comedy sketch mocking rape aired on the station last month. The video shows a woman being chased by a suspected rapist, but when she goes to use the campus blue-light system for help it begins to mock her with vulgar language. UConn students have been holding protests in regards to the video. The video was taken off of the station and their website. UCTV did release an official apology statement on their website stating, “In accordance with our mission, UCTV strives to serve as an open medium for UConn students to come to us and produce content without censorship. We apologize for any frustration or harm the respective video clip has caused and all of us here at UCTV have learned from this event.”

LIN Media Minority Scholarship Program

LIN Media is now accepting applications for its Minority Scholarship and Training Program. One broadcast television and one digital media scholarship/internship will be awarded at the NAB Show in April. Applications will be accepted until March 16, 2012.   • Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and be a declared major in broadcast journalism, digital multimedia, mass/speech/digital communication, television production, or marketing, at an accredited university or college within the United States.
  • Applicant must have completed sufficient semester hours or similar educational units to be classified by his/her college or university as a sophomore.
  • Applicant must be a citizen of the United States, or have permanent resident status; and be of non-white origin.

Weekly Showcase: University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

Our weekly showcase station this week is Titan TV at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.  This station has been around for 40+ years and continues to produce a wide variety of creative content. As stated on their Facebook page, “All of our shows are created and produced entirely by our student members and every student with an interest in television is welcome regardless of their academic major or their experience level.”

The “High Time Syndicate” is a sketch based comedy show that airs regularly on their station!

They also produce a children’s program using puppets called “Titan Forest.”

And this past year they won the CBI Award for Best General Entertainment Program with their show “Tales from a College Dorm.”
