KWSC has “smashing success” with 14th Annual Turkey Drop promotion

Inspired by a promotional stunt gone awry on the 1970s television situation comedy “WKRP in Cincinnati,” Wayne State University’s KWSC 91.1 “The Cat” combined a canned food drive with the spectacle of seeing objects dropped off a three story building, as reported by the Sioux City Journal:

“It’s become a fall tradition in which a donation of two cans of food for the local food pantry allows students to enter various items, then watch them shatter or splat on the south side of Pile Hall the Thursday before Thanksgiving. Entrants can win in four categories: longest hang time, biggest splat, best dressed and sharpshooter — for the item that lands nearest the target painted on the tarp below.”

Start the National College Media Conference right with First Night on Oct. 29

CBI_FLIERThe First Night adviser and student reception for the 2009 ACP/CMA National College Media Convention is being served up Austin-style!  Join College Media Network and College Broadcasters Inc. at one of the hippest clubs in town, The Mohawk, for Austin bands and Texas BBQ. Doors open at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, and the music starts at 5:30 at this exclusive event for all registered attendees, 18 and older,  of the National College Media Convention.  (Don’t forget your convention ID! You will NOT be allowed in without it!)

At “The Cabin,” the indoor bar, you’ll find the adviser reception, with Texas-style BBQ and sides.  Did we mention ice cold beer and well-poured drinks?  The music starts at 5:30 with The Lost and Nameless Orchestra, followed by The Blue Hit, and The Fireants.

Out on “The Range,” the outdoor stage, students (and advisers?!) will find some of Austin’s finest alternative bands.  The festivities start at 5:30 with Soundfield, Yellow Fever will follow,  and the party will be topped off by The Black and White Years, winners of five 2009 Austin Music Awards, including Austin Song of the Year, Best New Band and Best Band (Rock).

Catch a pedicab or take a short walk to The Mohawk, a mere 6 blocks north of the Hilton.  Pedicabs courtesy of Capital Pedicab.  (Don’t forget to tip your rider!) It’s a classic Austin night to introduce you to the Capitol of Texas and the 2009 ACP/CMA CBI National College Media Convention.  Don’t miss it!
