Last night’s Mind Over Music at the Palm Door had all the wonder and suspense of your usual trivia night, only with a score more geeks who hang out at record stores. The fourth annual fundraiser, put on by the Chronicle, finished after three hours of brain-racking competition with one clear champ: the radio whiz kids at KUTX.

It is estimated that there are only about 200 high schools in the nation with either a terrestrial over-the-air non-commercial, educational radio station or an Internet-only radio station.  “And that number is dropping,” said Radio Day founder Bowers.  “That’s why we need to unite on High School Radio Day and make the public aware of what we do, how we do it, and the service we provide to our communities,” he said.

“We selected area teens, 14 and up, as broadcast team members,” said organizer Dan Pettegrew. “Using local music, education and sports activities as homework assignments, Teen Day introduced them to the radio station environment firsthand.”

Following the example of the Camden Riversharks, the Philadelphia Soul have developed a partnership with Burlington County College’s radio station, WBZC-FM (Z88.9), to give students an opportunity to broadcast area professional sports games.

I hadn’t really given much thought to how DJs in Boston coped with the the lockdown during the search for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect until I read a fascinating story about a college radio DJ at M.I.T. radio station WMBR in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Jon Bernhardt, the long-time host of the Friday morning edition of “Breakfast of Champions,” ended up pulling an 8-hour shift at the station on April 19 after the DJs following him called in to say that they couldn’t make it to the station due to the lockdown in Boston.

Hofstra’s WRHU is believed to be the only college radio station that has an affiliation with a professional sports franchise. WRHU began airing Islanders hockey games in 2010.

The games are broadcast by a professional play-by-play announcer, Chris King, and a student color analyst, Kevin Dexter.

The Castleton State College radio station — with its studio located in the Campus Center — has seen its live programming grow from 15 hours a week in August to a current programming schedule of 70 hours a week. All it took to kick off this radio renaissance was some grass-roots marketing, said Program Director Zach Scheffler.
